1 DAWN CHORUS - ARCATA MARSH FIELD TRIP
6:30 AM  8:30 AM  $5.00  6
This pre-breakfast trip is planned to catch the dawn chorus in full swing at the Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary. Birds are on the move at this time, so there will be plenty of birding action. The willows will have songbirds singing and the reed beds will have chattering Marsh Wrens and possibly rails. The trip leader will explain all vocalizations from the straight forward Mallard quack, and California Quail "Chi-CA-go" call, to the more intricate sparrow calls and chips. This trips is for everyone and will provide an introduction to the skill of birding by ear. Return to the Community Center for some "shade grown"coffee and local pastries to prepare for your next day trip. Terrain is mostly flat on maintained trails but it may be muddy if there has been rain. Will not stop for food. Opportunity to use a spotting scope.

[Repeats with different leader on Friday as event #10; on Saturday as event #31; on Sunday as event #68; on Monday as event #98, and on Tuesday as event #103]

9 OWL SCOUTING FIELD TRIP
7:00 PM  10:00 PM  $0.00  0
Help scout potential locations for the Friday evening owl trip (reference event #26). Carpool through the Arcata Bottoms looking for Barn Owl and Short-eared Owl, then visit various locations using tapes or voice calling to elicit responses from the nighttime forest owls. Considerable effort is spent by wildlife biologists and technicians throughout Humboldt, Trinity and Del Norte Counties surveying at night for Spotted Owls. The limit of 18 people will keep the car-pool managable for night driving. This trip has no charge and will be canceled by rain. Requires good luck, a flashlight and warm clothes. Expect variable terrain and possibly wet ground. You may wish to bring a thermos of warm drinks, as it can be a long slow night if the owls don't cooperate. Opportunity to use spotting scope until dark.

23 SPOTTED OWLS FIELD TRIP 1
1:00 PM  5:00 PM  $15.00  2
Visit excellent spots to observe Northern Spotted Owls in their nesting habitat. Offers superb photographic opportunities, as the owls have become accustomed to human presence over the years they have been studied. The owls may be seen roadside, but more likely we will hike along a short but possibly steep, slippery trail. Wear hiking boots and dress in layers. Will not stop for food or restrooms. You may want to have a spotting scope available in your vehicle if we stop to scan for eagles, but it won’t be needed to see the owls. [Repeats on Saturday as Event #59; Sunday as Event #95.]
