26 NIGHTTIME OWLS FIELD TRIP
6:30 PM  10:00 PM  $20.00  2
Based on what the Owl Scouting Trip found (event #9), several locations will be searched in the hopes of a call or lucky glimpse of an owl. Hope for the best, but expect nothing. Owls are notoriously difficult to scare up on a field trip. Clear weather is best for nighttime owling; rain cancels this trip. Dress warm and wear comfortable shoes, although terrain is mostly flat. This trip will not be able to stop for food or restrooms. This year, the trip will be carpool instead of by bus for better access to areas where owls may be encountered. There may be opportunity to use a spotting scope until dark.

27 OPENING LECTURE
7:30 PM  8:00 PM  $0.00  246
The opening talk this year highlights our "sister festival" in Del Norte County. Every March from 1999 to 2008, the Aleutian Goose Festival celebrated the return of these endangered birds. Thousands of small Aleutian geese flocked to Castle Rock and the verdant fields of Del Norte County as a stopover on their spring migration route. Festival participants who joined the pre-dawn “goose fly off” witnessed firsthand the growing population of Aleutian geese each year and celebrated their recovery from near extinction. Today the Aleutian goose is a fully recovered species with a population surpassing 100,000. Sadly, the majority of geese that once visited our Crescent City shores have moved on to “greener pastures.”
In response, organizers have reinvented the Aleutian Goose Festival with a new name and date: the “California Redwoods Bird & Nature Festival" premieres May 7-9, 2010.
Like its predecessor, California Redwoods Bird & Nature Festival will continue to focus on the outstanding natural and cultural treasures of Del Norte County while offering many new programs and field trips—including bird watching, nature excursions, plant walks, and local native heritage workshops.

42 MAD RIVER RAFTING TRIP
8:00 AM  12:00 PM  $60.00  10
Local conditions provide great spring season rafting. Flows are usually up and sunny spring days are not unheard of. Up-close and stealthy is the best way to describe bird watching while rafting on the Lower Mad River . Rivers are natural wildlife viewing corridors because they create prime habitat for numerous species of birds. Floating along the river in a raft is quiet and tranquil, allowing viewers to spot birds comfortably and quietly, and most wildlife, especially birds, are relatively unperturbed by rafts and can often be approach to within just a few feet. Each raft holds 3 to 6 participants and is guided by one of the professional river guides of Redwoods and Rivers Rafting Company. The Lower Mad River is a great starting point, with rapids ranging from Class I to Class III (beginner’s level). 9:15 AM  3:00 PM  $15.00  13
The Eel River Delta to the south of Humboldt Bay is home to the Victorian town of Ferndale and some great waterfowl and riparian bird habitats. Visit the coastal freshwater ponds of the Eel River Wildlife Area (Ocean Ranch), location of many rare shorebirds. The Salt River can be a migrant corridor and should still hold Black-capped Chickadee and Golden-crowned Sparrow. The HBNWR although outside the Eel delta will also be visited and provides relaxed shorebird and waterfowl birding from the breeze-way. There is a great "carved wildlife" diorama of the South Bay wildlife at the HQ that also provides restrooms. The cemetery in town often has Red-breasted Sapsucker in the poplars. General all around car-birding will be enjoyed by up to 17 birders and the trip is focused on enjoying the all the birds encountered. Great for beginners! Expect variable terrain. Will not stop for food. There will be opportunity to use a spotting scope.

California Condors Beyond Contemporary Recovery Efforts: Rediscovering the Forgotten Northern Range

Since time immemorial the prey-go-neesh (California condor) has figured prominently in the cultural and spiritual traditions of the Yurok People. Condors have not soared the skies of northern California for over 100 years and the Yurok Tribe is currently engaged in a feasibility study to understand the potential for reintroduction. Chris West, the Yurok Tribe’s senior wildlife biologist, will discuss condor conservation, the history of the species in the Pacific Northwest, and current efforts to restore this enigmatic species to the full extent of its former range. There will be a short question and answer session at the end of the talk, and Chris and wildlife technician/Tribe member Tiana Williams will be available for additional questions and discussion at their table in the Godwit Days headquarters inside the Arcata Community Center throughout the Godwit Days weekend. For more information, visit http://www.yuroktribe.org/government/selfgovern/condorprogram.htm
