|
Discover the endangered and mysterious Marbled Murrelet, set in dramatic redwood old-growth forest with a local murrelet surveyor. This trip to Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park near Orick is for early birds! The dawn chorus, Varied Thrush, and Pileated Woodpecker, accompanies pre-dawn flights of the murrelets. (Carpool, 90 miles round trip). Flat terrain, but wet. Restrooms available, will not stop for food. These birds are usually seen only in flight and therefore are difficult to get in a spotting scope. Plenty of other redwood forest birds can be enjoyed. [Repeats on Sunday as Event #66.]

Aboard the Shenendoah, Pacific Ocean pelagic birds -- including Black-footed Albatross, shearwaters, Cassin’s Auklet, Sabine’s Gull, and jaegers -- are expected. Marine mammals such as migrating gray whales, dolphins, and seals are likely. Rough seas will have to cancel this trip and registrants will receive a full refund; or opt for a partial refund and join the leader for a land-based back up field trip including scoping the ocean from the north jetty. You would probably want to pack some food and water for this trip, and possibly motion sickness medication or wrist-bands.

|
|
This pre-breakfast trip is planned to catch the dawn chorus in full swing at the Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary. Birds are on the move at this time, so there will be plenty of birding action. The willows will have songbirds singing and the reed beds will have chattering Marsh Wrens and possibly rails. The trip leader will explain all vocalizations from the straight forward Mallard quack, and California Quail "Chi-CA-go" call, to the more intricate sparrow calls and chips. This trips is for everyone and will provide an introduction to the skill of birding by ear. Return to the Community Center for some "shade grown" coffee and local pastries to prepare for your next day trip.
Terrain is mostly flat on maintained trails but it may be muddy if there has been rain. Will not stop for food. Opportunity to use a spotting scope.[Repeats with different leader on Sunday as event #68; on Monday as event #98, and on Tuesday as event #103]

Join the Big Day team as they attempt to exceed the 100 species mark! Travel up and down the coast visiting our area’s best spots. This year, the Big Day groups will be smaller than in previous years so that there is a better chance for all participants to see or hear all the species tallied on the list. Prize for the most species seen between the Saturday and Sunday Big Day trips will be presented during the Sunday Evening Social (reference event #97). This is a fast-paced field trip, making several quick stops to record as many species of birds as possible. Many times, you will not wander far from the bus which is provided for this trip. Trip includes a box lunch (vegetarian choice available). Restrooms available at some stops. This trip may be too fast-paced to bother with a spotting scope. [Repeats on Sunday as Event #73.]

Head to Horse Mountain (about 30 minutes inland) to search for montane species such as Townsend’s Solitaire along the higher elevations (4500 feet) reached on Forest Service Route 1 (Titlow Hill). Bring a lunch and expect beautiful scenery! There may even be some snow on the ground, but that never discourages the Mountain Chickadees. The land here is managed by the Six Rivers National Forest (Trinity District). Details of wildlife and other "multiple uses" of the USFS can be seen at the bird fair. Additional materials may be of interest Friday night before the Saturday morning trip. Roads are tight up in this hill-timber country and unexpected vehicles can cause problems. For this reason we ask that you consider car-pooling to the greatest extent possible. Prepare for variable terrain, possibly snow or wet ground. Restrooms are not available. You may wish to pack a lunch. There will be opportunities to use a spotting scope.

Local conditions provide great spring season rafting. Flows are usually up and sunny spring days are not unheard of. Up-close and stealthy is the best way to describe bird watching while rafting on the Lower Mad River . Rivers are natural wildlife viewing corridors because they create prime habitat for numerous species of birds. Floating along the river in a raft is quiet and tranquil, allowing viewers to spot birds comfortably and quietly, and most wildlife, especially birds, are relatively unperturbed by rafts and can often be approach to within just a few feet. Each raft holds 3 to 6 participants and is guided by one of the professional river guides of Redwoods and Rivers Rafting Company. The Lower Mad River is a great starting point, with rapids ranging from Class I to Class III (beginner’s level). [[Note: No basic registration fee is required for this event for those attending no other events during the festival, other than those designated as “Free to general public.” Call 826-7050 to register.] Equipment provided. We reach the take-out spot by the end time of noon. It takes about another half hour to return to the community center. Dress for wet conditions, will not stop for food.
Since Redwoods & Rivers incurs and commits to operating expenses prior to each trip, our cancellation and refund policy reflect the fact that these expenses cannot be recovered upon cancellation. Redwoods & Rivers reserves the right to cancel or modify any trip due to weather conditions or other good cause beyond our control. If your trip is canceled, you will receive a full refund.

Visit the remote southern peninsula of the opening to Humboldt Bay, an important location for Brant and Snowy Plover. Participants have the option of participating in a 1 mile round trip guided walk on sand and dunes to visit a western snowy plover habitat restoration project. The terrain is generally flat and surfaces range from pavement, graveled parking areas, open drifting sand, and vegetated sandy areas. There is the possibility of an additional walk over low sand dunes. Prepare for all types of weather. This area is subject to marine influences including high winds and heavy surf. There are no shelters or shaded areas on the South Spit. There is plenty of opportunity to snack in vehicles between birding stops along the South Spit. The trip ends at the south jetty around mid-day and picnic tables are available for those who bring lunch. The group will be able to visit the restrooms at the south parking lot at the start of the trip and the north parking lot at the finish.
