2 Birding Highway 101
7:00 AM  7:00 PM  $100.00  9
This trip is designed to allow guests to fly into San Francisco International Airport and be picked up at an Airport Hotel Thursday morning. Ken Burton, a veteran California birder, will be the guide and transport you up Highway 101 to Arcata. Key birding stops along the way will be checked. This will be a great introduction for all who have not been to the Golden State before. The five or six-hour drive will have several stops, including lunch and dinner at pre-selected restaurants, and the birding will cover San Francisco Bay, marshlands, oak woodlands, and conifer forests. We will allow an additional six hours for birding and arrive at a hotel in Arcata Thursday night. If you are available for an extended stay, you could join the NE California trip (reference event #127) and the Central Valley Refuges to S.F. airport (reference event #140) that will return down the Central Valley from Redding and on to San Francisco by Wednesday. Overall a fantastic week, focusing on all the varied habitats and birds of Northern California. Either way we hope you consider this alternative method of getting to and from our festival. If you are an international guest planning to stay for a week or so, traveling courtesy of our guides in their vehicles is absolutely the best “birds for your dollar, pound, or euro."

17 OWL SCOUTING FIELD TRIP
7:00 PM  10:00 PM  $0.00  4
Help scout potential locations for the Friday evening bus tour (reference event #36). Carpool through the Arcata Bottoms looking for Barn Owl and Short-eared Owl, then visit various locations using tapes or voice calling to elicit responses from the nighttime forest owls. Keith is an experienced "owler" and can demonstrate various calling techniques. Considerable effort is spent by wildlife biologists and technicians throughout Humboldt, Trinity and Del Norte Counties surveying at night for Spotted Owls. Interesting work, but for many wildlife students it is the first real wildlife experience they will get. The limit of 18 people will keep the car-pool managable for night driving. This trip has no charge and will be cancelled by rain. Requires good luck, a flashlight and warm clothes. Expect variable terrain and possibly wet ground. Warm drinks too, as it can be a long slow night if the owls don't cooperate. Opportunity to use spotting scope until dark.
