Godwit Days - North Coast Bird Migration Festival

The North Coast

About our Wild Redwood Coast

This place is a naturalist's dream. Home of Giant Redwoods, the tallest trees in the world found only in Northern California. The wild rivers, forests, and coasts are legendary for abundant salmon runs, massive redwood logs, and the lure of gold.

Humboldt County is the home of the Redwood National and State Parks, which are rated third among all the national parks for the diversity of their recorded bird species. Our county alone has a total bird list of 425 species.

That surpasses the record of 40 other states and 10 Canadian provinces. The local Christmas bird counts, like much of California, regularly finish in the top 25 in the nation for number of species. For our latitude, Arcata and Centerville record the highest tallies in the nation. We have recorded some of the nation's highest totals for our festival icon, the Marbled Godwit. Our festival species list has recorded over 230 species for April alone.
Extraordinary Birding from the Redwoods to Humboldt Bay
Godwit Days is held at the height of the shorebird and spring migration, when hundreds and thousands of migrating birds congregate in wetlands, rivers, and Humboldt Bay. Godwit Days showcases the Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary, which has recorded over 250 bird species. Humboldt Bay is second only to San Francisco Bay in biological productivity within the state of California.

Other trips take visitors to the famous old-growth Headwaters Reserve, deserted beaches, the West's largest coastal lagoon, fern-covered canyons, and rugged coastal shores. Our Big Day event has consistently spotted over 100 species in a single day!
